Enterprise Uganda
is implementing the STRENGTHENING WOMEN
ENTREPRENEURS IN UGANDA PROJECT (SWEP),
in partnership with the Government of Norway.
This three year project (2008-2010) targets
women entrepreneurs in the urban and rural
areas. It seeks to provide gender sensitive
training and business support services to
enhance urban and rural women’s participation
in economic development in order to contribute
to job creation, improved household incomes;
improved food security; promote value addition
in agriculture promote access to markets
and financial services.
The
project targets individual women in business
currently owning and operating a business
and women groups or clusters with a membership
of between 20-100 people engaged in business
or income generating activities. All sectors
are eligible for support although preference
will be given to the agri-business sector.
Specifically
the women enterprises will be strengthened
by delivering a mix of business solutions
to overcoming obstacles faced by women entrepreneurs
in Uganda such as accessing finance, markets
and Business Development Services (BDS. These
include among others: entrepreneurship training;
Business management skills; development of
business plans; business diagnostic studies;
linkages to markets; access to appropriate
technologies and strengthening of women groups
Already
the programme has selected 100 urban women entrepreneurs
and 21 women groups located in most of the regions
of the country with a total of over 2,000 members.
So far the feedback from the initial beneficiaries
has been encouraging and some of them have already
registered improvement in their business performance
as can be demonstrated by the comments below:
