In
Jonam County, Nebbi district in West Nile, along
the banks of the Nile are found the Alur people
with a rich history. They are also called the Jonam
– meaning ‘people of the lake or river.’ |
| |
 |
Pakwach
Bridge is a landmark symbolizing an entry
to West Nile region |
|
| |
However,
despite being located close to the river with all
its potential like good roads, abundant fresh water,
wildlife, fertile soils, rare and expensive delicious
fish varieties locally called ‘Angara and
Peedo’ – they are equally complaining
of biting poverty and lack of economic opportunities
in their area. The Jonam like many Ugandans seem
not to have learnt a lesson from the famous Chinese
proverb which says that ‘Give a man
a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to
fish and you feed him for a lifetime’. |

Motivated by the
need to economically empower his people especially
the youth, Hon. Omach invited Enterprise Uganda
to provide the entrepreneurship and business skills
training to the Youth of Jonam County in May 2009,
at Accord Hall in Pakwach. It had a record attendance
of 330 youth even exceeding the attendance in
Kampala with the majority of educated but jobless
youths. This was the first time Enterprise Uganda
extended the Business clinic training to the Youth
upcountry at the constituency level.
Moreover, each youth
had to contribute Ushs. 5,000/= towards the training,
in contrast with other programmes where people
are paid to attend trainings even if such trainings
are for their own benefit. below we show a pictorial
of testimonies from the Youths in Jonam who embarked
on the enterprise journey immediately after attending
the business clinic.
