NAADS BENEFICIARIES CHALLENGED |
|
| |
The
Executive Director, Enterprise Uganda, Mr.
Charles Ocici has challenged the beneficiaries
of NAADS programme to perform better with
the grants they get so as to attract even
bigger gifts from the programme. He said some
beneficiaries had misused, neglected or even
eaten the grants given to them by NAADS and
then turned up again the next year looking
worse than the previous year and yet asking
for more grants. “If you want to qualify
for a bigger gift, you must first make good
use of the one goat you received so that the
next time you don’t again receive a
goat but 5 heifers”, he said. |

Mr.
Ocici gave the advice at the closing of a
5-day Business & Enterprise Start-up Tool
(BEST) clinic conducted by Enterprise Uganda
at new Buyende District Headquarters in Budhiope
County from 13-16 April 2010. This was the
12th BEST clinic conducted by Enterprise Uganda
and was attended by 1347 youths and their
leaders. It was so far the highest attendance
by youths who had to make a contribution of
Ushs. 5,000/= each to attend the clinic. Even
the mobile 1000 seater tent that had been
erected at the venues proved inadequate for
the streaming number of villagers. Two weeks
ago 1,256 participants attended the clinic
at the Kamuli Youth Centre and in both clinics,
participants thronged to the venue daily on
foot, using bicycles and motor cycles, some
from 20 km away to catch the action. In Buyende,
over 125 participants from distant places
including mothers with babies travelled with
their mattresses and slept at the same tent
used for training after the daily sessions. |

The
beneficiaries of NAADS programme in Buyende
District confessed to Mr. Ocici that some
of the reasons why the NAADS programme was
not performing well and not improved their
livelihoods were their negative attitudes,
lack of ownership of the programme, lack
of entrepreneurship and business skills
before receiving the grants.
One
participant testified to the audience how
he had received 100 orange trees from NAADS
but because of his negative attitude, he
didn’t attend to them and when they
died he did not show any regret while referring
to them as “NAADS oranges”.
He now regretted that if only he had been
to such a clinic before he received the
NAADS support, he would not have neglected
the oranges. He promised never again to
neglect any support he receives from anybody.

The Chairman Bugaya Sub-County
NAADS Farmers’ organization Mr. Stephen
Kigozi hailed the Deputy Speaker of Parliament
Hon. Rebecca Kadaga who was the chief Guest,
the area MP, and the district leadership for
inviting Enterprise Uganda to train the farmers
and Youth of Buyende district. He requested
that the training be extended to all the sub-counties
in the district so that many farmers who had
received NAADS assistance can look after them
better and improve their incomes to develop
the new district.
Enterprise
Uganda with the support of the Ministry of
Finance, Planning & Economic Development
plans to roll out the BEST programme to other
districts in the coming months. |
